Some of My Best Decisions Are Impulsive Ones

On signing up for adult skateboarding lessons on a whim — and what that taught me about following your heart.

We decided last minute to take the boys to a skatepark on Sunday, not really knowing if we could get in or join as the website wasn’t clear.

The boys loved it. For over an hour they learned and practised. Seeing H go from not being able to balance on the board to confidently kicking and moving forward on it, and seeing G getting very comfortable with getting on the board, moving, turning, and almost pivoting, was incredibly satisfying as a proud father.

And then, while I was looking up classes for the boys, I noticed they had adult lessons starting on the Tuesday. I signed up impulsively.

And then I went last night, not knowing what to expect. Am I too old to really be learning to skateboard? What will the people be like? What if I fall? I had doubts, but having seen how much joy it brought to the boys, I wanted to give it a go.

And boy was it glorious. I moved, and I did way more than what I thought I was able to. I even landed my first trick with a ramp — a fakie revert.

Some of my best decisions are impulsive ones. Follow your heart.
